Tesla Coil Schematic

How can I modify a small Tesla coil to transmit radio waves in the AM band, and also be tunable?

I know that Tesla coils generate “high” frequency and high intensity radio waves, but is it possible to modify one to actually transmit information? Particularly, I’m interested in transmitting AM band radio waves of different frequencies, so I’d need a tunable device. If anyone out there knows how to do this, I would really appreciate your assistance and, if possible, detailed Schematics and/or instructions on how to do it.

Thanks for your assistance.

Notes: I’m not the kind of moron who would get shocked by working with high voltage equipment, so don’t worry about safety; I’ve made Tesla coils before and I’ve always taken great care. Also, don’t worry about any laws regarding transmission of radio waves. In my country, this is allowed.

A Tesla coil is a very “messy” way of making RF. These were part of spark-gap transmitters and only good for CW (morse code) transmissions. You’d be much better off at making a more conventional transmitter:

A design might be an audio amplifier into a modulator into a final amplifier into the antenna. The modulator is also fed with a variable frequency oscillator (VFO) at the desired carrier frequency. You might have buffer amplifiers between some of these stages too.

Check out the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) website, www.arrl.org. The book “Build Your Own Low-Power Transmitters” might be just what you are looking for. There are a few more there you might like. “The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications” is always a favorite too.

Sounds like you might definitely be interested in becoming an Amateur Radio operator. The stuff you build (or buy) can be used to talk around world or around town.
