Radio Schematics

How does a simple FM radio receiver work/ what is a reliable type.?
I am trying to make a 49MHz receiver for a project. I can’t find anything that throughly explains how some of these Schematics actually work.
The absolute simplest kind is a “slope detector”. This sends the RF signal to a tuned circuit that is tuned slightly away from the station frrequency and from there to a standard AM detector. The tuned circuit will have a higher output when the FM signal is closer to resonance and a lower output when it’s further from resonance. It will have quite a lot of distortion and provides none of the noise immunity that a better design can. The ref. discusses this and more evolved forms of FM receivers.
