What subjects would I need to study to make the jump from basic circuit analysis to power distribution?

I took a circuit theory class several years ago and I wanted to learn more about power transmission and distribution, so I picked up a book about it. However, even the first pages are beyond me. It’s starting off talking about power flow analysis and system stability. The Schematics use symbols I’ve never seen with no explanations. What topics should I study to go past basic op amp circuits to being able to understand this power distribution text?

I know its frustrating to study something like that, but just power through it and don’t dwell on parts you don’t understand, you’ll understand later and can read it again if you want.
